Most archives have a collection of cassette tapes that contain speeches, concert recordings, oral histories, radio broadcasts and personal memories, but after thirty or more years in storage, could be compromised by time and its storage environment.
LILRC's Project Archivist Robert Anen will offer a program on digitizing audio cassette tapes to create a "use copy". He will discuss the anatomy of a cassette tape, how to inspect its mechanics and make minor repairs (without being an expert), and the importance of passive versus active preservation. He will include a brief hardware and software overview, teach us about what is inherent in a recording, give us listening tips, and explain how to store the digital file as well as the physical cassette tape.
