MLA Webinar: Is Google Scholar Smart Enough for Your Reviews?

If you have not used Google Scholar for reviews, this webinar may change your mind. Sarah Bonato, our resident expert on Google Scholar, will show you all you need to know about the strengths and weaknesses of Google Scholar, the content available on Scholar, and how Scholar indexes material.

You’ll leave the webinar being able to design a search plan to get the results you want, modify and run searches, and advise review team members on using Google Scholar as one source of studies for a review.

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe research on the value of using Google Scholar in reviews
  • Explain the strengths and limitations of Google Scholar
  • Describe the research content available on Google Scholar
  • Use the basic and advanced Google Scholar search interfaces
  • Assist research teams in deciding to use Google Scholar in searches
  • Modify database searches for Google Scholar
  • Document a Google search
  • Audience
  • Librarians and information professionals who provide or want to provide guidance on searching. Prior searching experience is helpful, but not required. 

Presenter

Sarah Bonato is the lead reference services and research services librarian at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, ON. She is a co-author of more than 10 systematic reviews/guidelines and the author of Searching the Grey Literature: A Handbook for Searching Reports, Working Papers, and Other Unpublished Research.
