Did you know listing on the National and State Registers of Historic Places does not protect historic places from demolition or redevelopment? Only municipalities and local preservation ordinances can protect historic places from destruction. Nevertheless, federal and state preservation laws play an important role by offering attractive financial incentives like tax credits, or by requiring a more intensive process of environmental review for some projects. Explore how local, state, and federal laws work together to preserve historic places, and how you can support a more comprehensive approach to preservation in your community.

Sarah Kautz is the Preservation Director at Preservation Long Island. Their mission "is to celebrate and preserve Long Island’s diverse cultural and architectural heritage through advocacy, education, and stewardship of historic sites and collections."

If you do not already have a LILRC account you will be prompted to create one (if you have forgotten your password, and need help resetting it you can email Eliscia at ecirrone@lilrc.org).

If you do not already have a zoom account you will be prompted to do so upon logging into the meeting.  If this is the first time you are using Zoom, after you have created an account, you can join the meeting by entering the Meeting ID/ Password provided to you in the confirmation email.  You can access all subsequent Zoom meetings by clicking the meeting link in the confirmation email.

During this interruption of our normal working day, Nicole Menchise is creating live Zoom 'workshops' for the benefit of anyone interested in best practices for preservation of items at home or work.  The workshops are a combination of slides shared on the screen and hands-on techniques.

These webinars are for those interested in getting some practical, professional advice about how to preserve your personal family archives, or are looking to learn something to bring back to their organizations.  Plan to budget 60 minutes for each meeting in order to have ample time to cover the topic and to answer comments and questions during and after the webinar.

As the Digitization and Archives Coordinator for LILRC, Menchise is basing these webinars on some elements of the preservation workshops she has done in the past.  The inspiration came from the "Ask An Archivist" segment she writes for the Long Island Archives Newsletter published bi-monthly for LILRC.  To see the past issues and other publications from LILRC, go to https://lilrc.org/Newsletters.
