We're All Technology Librarians Now

What's "the future of libraries" going to look like? Well, one thing we know is that our role as technology hubs and education centers is not likely to change anytime soon. As a direct response to our patrons' needs, we must work on building an increased understanding of technology and empowering staff members to take on troubleshooting themselves. The library's technology staff is freed up to tackle larger issues, other team members benefit from quicker solutions to problems, and patrons benefit from the skills and patience developed among staff.

After attending this session, participants will be able to:
Mobilize staff and leverage tools to develop technology skills in the reference department and beyond;
Use transferable skills to provide robust technology training for staff and programming/learning opportunities for patrons; and
Assess current staff and community technology needs and use these as a starting point for a culture of ongoing, evolving support.

CALLAN BIGNOLI is the director of the library at Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts. She gathers inspiration from everywhere to inform user-centered practices and push the profession forward. Callan studies and speaks about user experience design, library management, and social issues in technology, challenging students and colleagues to fight for a more just and human future.
