Graphic medicine, or the overlap of comics and healthcare, has emerged over the past decade from a once small, sporadically discussed idea to a burgeoning field of study and subgenre in its own right. For librarians, the growth of the field - which includes a National Library of Medicine exhibit, "Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived and Well Drawn!" - presents numerous opportunities, ranging from reinvigorating interest in physical collections to interactive programming and fun outreach possibilities. This talk will go beyond the "what" of graphic medicine to discuss "why" and "how" you can integrate comics into your library work. Matthew will share his experience developing the NNLM/NER Graphic Medicine Book Club Kits and all about the activities of the Graphic Medicine International Collective (GMIC), hosts of the annual Graphic Medicine conferences, GraphicMedicine.org, and more.

Presenter: Matthew Noe (he/his) is Lead Collection & Knowledge Management Librarian at Countway Library, Harvard Medical School, where he specializes in graphic medicine and health humanities. He's heavily active in both ALA and MLA, including as a 2020 ALA Emerging Leader. He is a co-editor of GraphicMedicine.org, has received multiple grants to study and promote comics in medicine, and regularly speaks to anyone who will listen about comics librarianship.
