Full-Time Adult Reference Department Head - Hampton Bays Public Library

Reports directly to the Library Director and works cooperatively with other department heads and library support staff; supervises a staff of one full-time librarian, four regular part-time librarian staff, and  several part-time librarian subs. 35-hour work week; evenings and weekends may be required. 

Summary objective of the job.

Under the general supervision of the Library Director, perform highly responsible administrative, supervisory, and direct reference service; manage the reference department’s operations and staff.  Administers the budgets for print and audio books, eBooks for Kindles, and periodicals.  Makes recommendations for electronic resources.


MLS from an ALA accredited library school and a minimum of 4-5 years of public library experience in progressively more responsible professional positions.

Job duties and responsibilities. 

  • Supervises all operations of the Reference Department and communicate library policies effectively with staff.

  • Delivers exceptional customer service to all library patrons.

  • Provide general reference service using print and electronic resources, including Live-brary and proprietary digital products.

  • Assists patrons with use of technology, both in-library resources and personal devices.

  • Oversees the creation and implementation of in-house technology programs and services: Book-a-Librarian, Drop-in Tech, Tech labs.

  • Uses social media to promote library programs and services; create content for website and newsletter and other outlets; manage departmental email.

  • Material acquisition: select and order print books [fic, nonfic, large print], digital books, audiobook cds, and periodicals; contribute to the dvd and music cd collections.

  • Collection management: weeding and space allocation.

  • Manages special collections such as Local History/Long Island (including the newspaper archives), Literacy, and Career Collections.

  • Creates monthly department schedules and board reports; maintains statistics.

  • Provides readers advisory; promotes library collections in visually pleasing displays; plans and promotes seasonal reading clubs for adults; creates in-house marketing materials (flyers, etc).

  • Community outreach with the Hampton Bays Community/Senior Center and local book clubs; “laundromat books” outreach.

  • Manages Interlibrary loans (outside Sierra and LILink)

  • Staff training for new hires.

  • Coordinates scheduling and use of study rooms.

  • Continues education by attending professional meetings and conferences and keeping up with professional journals and resources, online and in print. 

  • Evaluates new library products and services in coordination with vendors and other library professionals.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director (e.g., newsletter).

Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
  • Tech savvy in typical library applications like Windows, Office, and print management software; research expertise with online digital resources including Live-brary. 

  • Comfortable with all aspects of social media. 

  • Experience with circulation software (Sierra). 

  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) strongly desired.
